Dan, a cyclist based in Vancouver, BC, Canada, recently reached out to share a story that highlights exactly why investing in high-quality bike security matters. His experience is a powerful reminder that the right lock doesn’t just protect your bike, it can completely stop a theft attempt in its tracks.
“I'm reaching out regarding my Litelok X1, which was targeted in an attempted theft. I'm from Vancouver, BC, Canada.”

At first glance, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Dan had stored his approx $800 Orbea Avant 57 bike in his building’s underground, gated garage, generally considered a secure environment. He had even taken extra precautions, locking his bike with multiple locks.
“Unsure when the attempt happened - I put locked my bike away in ~ October 2025, and used it today. I checked periodically, but didn't realize anything was wrong as the bike was still there…”
That assumption, that if the bike is still there, everything is fine, is one many cyclists share. But when Dan finally went to use his bike, he discovered something alarming.

“When I took my bike out today, I found metal filings, and that that someone had attempted to cut through the lock's shackle.”
The signs were unmistakable: this was no casual tampering. It appeared to be a serious attempt using an angle grinder, one of the most aggressive tools bike thieves rely on.
What stands out is that, despite multiple locks being present, the thieves committed to attacking the LITELOK X1.
"The good news: the bike is still here and the lock held - your lock did exactly what it's supposed to do."
The attack damaged the outer layer and made a partial cut into the metal. However, due to the lock’s anti-rotation design, two complete cuts would have been required to remove it, significantly increasing the time, grinder discs, and battery power needed.
“The bad news is that the outer layer has been significantly damaged in the attack, with the armour visibly breached and frayed at the cut point.”

This kind of damage reflects the reality of angle grinder attacks, they are aggressive, noisy, and time-consuming. When a lock resists long enough, it increases the risk for the thief and often forces them to abandon the attempt altogether.
“Interestingly, I had 4 other locks on the bike (!!!). I thought I was crazy for being so cautious, but clearly not. The other 4 locks were not attempted…”
This highlights a key takeaway for all riders: layered security matters. Using multiple locks doesn’t just add physical barriers, it creates psychological deterrence. The more time, tools, and effort required, the less attractive the target becomes.

In Dan’s case, the combination of the highly resistant LITELOK X1 and additional layers of security likely played a role in stopping the theft altogether. Faced with increasing effort and risk, the thieves chose to walk away.
He summed up his experience simply:
“Thank you for making a product that actually works.”
And the impact didn’t stop there.
“My wife, having seen this, is now also going to purchase a lock for herself.”
